Daily Fog: Blast Off

Jace Bohrofen (Oklahoma) delivered more of the same for the Falmouth Commodores on Tuesday, and had some help from a guy who did something new.

Bohrofen hit his fourth home run of the summer, continuing a fantastic start that has him in triple crown contention. Teammate Kristofer Armstrong (Florida) was zero for his first nine since his debut on July 2, but broke out in a big way on Tuesday with two home runs in a 4-for-5 night. The Commodores had all that offense and more in a 14-2 victory over Brewster, finishing with six home runs and 15 hits.

Bohrofen has a hit in all but two games this summer and is in the top four in batting average, home runs and RBI. He’s batting .349 with a league-best 15 RBI. His home run total is tied for second best in the league.

It’s been a slower start for Armstrong so Tuesday’s game was just what the doctor ordered. Coming off a spring season in which he hit eight home runs, Armstrong got his first CCBL hit in the second inning – a single – and he wasn’t done there. He hit a solo home run in the third inning, a single in the sixth and a second home run in the eighth inning.

Armstrong and Bohrofen had some help from the rest of the lineup. Michael Curialle (UCLA) had two hits and three RBI. Brayden Taylor went 4-for-5 with a homer and three RBI. Taylor Smith (Texas A&M) also went deep.

Jack Jasiak was the beneficiary of the offensive burst and didn’t need much support anyway. He struck out six and allowed one hit in five innings of work.

The offense-pitching combo was enough for Falmouth to snap a losing skid. The Commodores are 5-6-2.

Brewster had won two straight with dominant pitching but drops to 6-5-2 overall.

Y-D 6, Chatham 3

The Red Sox scored five runs in the top of the first inning and didn’t need much else for a win over Chatham. Wyatt Hoffman (Pacific), Chase Luttrell (Long Beach State) and Zach Lew (Cal State Fullerton) each had three hits. Nick Dombkowski (Hartford) came through with his third strong start of the summer, allowing two runs in 5.1 innings. His ERA sits at 2.20. For Chatham, Lyle Miller-Green (Chipola) homered. Y-D is alone in first place in the East.

Wareham 5, Cotuit 2

Last seen knocking Bourne from the unbeaten ranks, Cotuit couldn’t make it two in a row as they fell short against another West rival. Yohandy Morales (Miami), Justin Williams (Penn State) and Jimmy Crooks (Oklahoma) led the Wareham attack with two hits apiece. Williams homered. Adam Mazur (South Dakota State) was credited with the win in relief after three scoreless innings.

Bourne 2, Orleans 2

Orleans pulled even in the fifth inning and kept Bourne from a complete rebound after its first loss of the season. Peyton Chatagnier (Ole Miss) scored the tying run on a double steal with Rhylan Thomas (USC). There was plenty of time left for for both teams to break the deadlock but bullpens dominated down the stretch. Eric Adler (Wake Forest) carried the torch for the Braves with three strikeouts in one inning. Three Orleans relievers combined for six shutout innings.

WHAT TO WATCH

Falmouth will try to keep its offense hot as it visits Bourne.

Daily Fog: Perfect no longer

Twelve games into the season, someone finally got the best of the Bourne Braves.

Cotuit shut out the Braves 2-0 on Monday night at Doran Park, handing the hosts their first loss of the season.

Two runs in the fourth inning were enough for the Kettleers, who allowed nine hits but no runs.

Jake Smith (Miami) started the shut-down effort with his second consecutive start with five shutout innings. After striking out 10 in his first start of the summer, he fanned only two this time and gave up six hits, but worked out of any trouble he was in.

Zachary Fruit (Eastern Michigan) went one inning and Alaska Abney (Coastal Carolina) struck out all three batters he faced in an inning of work. Zachary Cable (Oklahoma State) pitched the final two innings for the save.

The offense came courtesy of one swing of the bat. Following a Luke Gold (Boston College) single, Andy Garriola (Old Dominion) cranked a two-run homer for the 2-0 lead.

Bourne starter Nick Zwack (Xavier) didn’t allow anything else, but for once, it wasn’t enough.

Bourne falls to 9-1-2 while Cotuit gets back to .500 at 6-6.

Y-D 5, Falmouth 4

The Red Sox trailed 4-2 but scored three runs in the seventh to take control en route to their second straight win. Wyatt Hoffman (Pacific) did all the damage in the late rally with a three-run homer. Pascanel Ferreras (Western Carolina) also went deep. Nathan Baez (Arizona State) added an RBI. Luis Ramirez (Long Beach State) struck out seven and allowed three runs in six innings. Zachary Jacobs (UC Riverside) was credited with the win. Reid McLaughlin (BYU) recorded a six-out save. Falmouth got home runs from Jace Bohrofen (Oklahoma), Bryson Ware (Auburn) and Taylor Smith (Texas A&M).

Chatham 4, Hyannis 1

Four pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts and surrendered just two hits as Chatham beat Hyannis. After two relief appearances, Adam Tulloch (West Virginia) made his first start and struck out eight in five scoreless innings. His Mountaineer and Chatham teammate Jacob Watters. Matthew Garcia (Chipola) had two RBI for the Anglers, who improved to 5-6-2. The struggles continue for Hyannis, which fell to 2-10.

Harwich 5, Wareham 3

Harwich built an early lead and held off a charge by the Gatemen for a win. Carter Putz (Notre Dame) had two hits and three RBI for the winners. Brock WIlken (Wake Forest) and Jordan Beck (Tennessee) drove in one run apiece. Spencer Giesting (Charlotte) went 3.1 scoreless innings. Carson Seymour (Kansas State) struck out five in two innings for the win.

Brewster 5, Orleans 2

One day after a shutout, Brewster rode strong pitching again to a win over Orleans. Bryce Hubbart (Florida State) was good for a second straight outing, striking out six in five scoreless innings. Dale Stanavich (Rutgers) followed him with a save. The Whitecaped took the lead with three runs in the sixth. Orleans broke up the shutout bid in the seventh but couldn’t get closer than one run. Kurtis Byrne (TCU) had three hits and two RBI.

WHAT TO WATCH

Y-D is in first place in the East, but is getting pushed by a bunch of teams. Chatham is in the mix and takes on the Red Sox on Tuesday.

Daily Fog: Scarlet, White and Blue

Last seen giving up 19 runs in a loss to Orleans, the Brewster Whitecaps were a lot better on the Fourth of July thanks to a pair of Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

Harrison Rutkowski (Rutgers) pitched six scoreless innings and teammate Brian Fitzpatrick (Rutgers) finished off the shutout with three scoreless frames as the Whitecaps beat Harwich 7-0.

Rutkowski has been dominant so far this summer. Following a spring season in which he led the Scarlet Knights in strikeouts, he has made two carbon copy starts for Brewster. He tossed six scoreless innings in his debut and did it again on Sunday. He’s allowed just three hits across the two starts. On Sunday, he struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.

Fitzpatrick gave up two runs in each of his first two outings with the Whitecaps but he was on target in this one, striking out one and allowing only one hit en route to a three-inning save.

The Rutgers duo had offensive support throughout, with Brewster scoring three runs in the second inning and adding on over four of the final six innings. Shawn Goosenberg (Northwestern) went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Dillon Carter (Texas Tech) went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Brewster is now 5-4-2.

Bourne 4, Wareham 0

At some point, the Bourne Braves are going to lose a game. Right? It didn’t happen on the Fourth of July. With a 4-0 win over Wareham on Sunday, the Braves are now 9-0-2. Gordon Graceffo (Villanova) delivered his third impressive start of the season, allowing three hits in five scoreless innings. Behind him, the bullpen was even better. Trystan Vrieling (Gonzaga) struck out four and didn’t give up a hit in three innings. Eric Adler (Wake Forest) didn’t surrender a hit either while pitching the ninth for his third save of the summer. Wareham pitchers were pretty good, too. It was a shutout into the sixth, but the Braves broke through for two runs in the sixth and two more in the ninth. Kyler Fedko (UConn) broke the tie with an RBI single and Nick Goodwin (Kansas State) drew a bases loaded walk to plate another. Max Anderson (Nebraska) delivered two insurance runs with a single in the ninth.

Cotuit 4, Falmouth 3

The Kettleers snapped a two-game skid with a narrow victory over Falmouth. Two runs in the second inning and two more in the third ended up being enough as Cotuit held off a Falmouth comeback. RJ Schreck (Duke) led Cotuit with two RBI. Ben Rice (Dartmouth) and Eric Brown (Coastal Carolina) knocked in one run each. Justin Meis (Eastern Michigan) was terrific on the mound, allowing just one hit and striking out seven in five innings of shutout ball. After Falmouth made some headway against the bullpen, Andre Granillo closed the door with 2.1 scoreless frames. Cotuit is now 5-6 and Falmouth is 4-5-2.

Y-D 7, Hyannis 1

Y-D has had more ties than anyone else in this no-extra-innings summer, but they avoided one here with a late surge. It was a 1-1 game in the seventh, when the Red Sox broke out with four runs. They added two in the eighth to finish it off. Chase Luttrell (Long Beach State), Pascanel Ferreras (Western Carolina) and Tanner Smith (Oregon) drove in one run apiece. Patrick Gallagher (UConn) had one of the best strikeout games in the league so far, fanning 11 in five innings. The Red Sox go to 5-3-4. Hyannis is 2-9.

Orleans 8, Chatham 3

The Firebirds continued to put up big offensive numbers in their third straight win. They’re averaging 13 runs per game in the streak. Chase DeLauter (James Madison) hit his league best fifth home run and Peyton Chatagnier (Ole Miss) homered for the second straight game. Rhylan Thomas (USC) went 4-for-5 with two RBI and continues to lead the league in hitting with a .457 batting average. On the mound, Jonathan Cannon (Georgia) allowed his first run of the summer but only one in four strong innings. Donovan Benoit (Tulane) was credited with the win in relief. Orleans improves to 6-4-1 and Chatham falls to 4-6-2.

WHAT TO WATCH

Can Orleans keep it up against a premium arm? Bryce Hubbart (Florida State) starts for Brewster against the Firebirds after fanning nine in five scoreless innings last time out.

Daily Fog: On Fire

It was an encore performance and then some for the Orleans Firebirds on Friday night.

Two days after a 12-4 win over Cotuit, the Firebirds put up even bigger offensive numbers in an eye-popping 19-6 victory over Brewster. It’s the most runs scored in the league this season, and the Firebirds now lead the Cape in total runs scored on the year.

Amazingly, the blowout started with Brewster scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Orleans didn’t score until the second, but put up runs in every subsequent inning, including a nine-run surge in the fifth inning.

The Firebirds totaled 18 hits and smashed seven home runs. Three different players had two home runs each.

Chase DeLauter (James Madison) had the biggest of the big games, going 5-for-5 with two home runs, four runs scored and three RBI. Tyler Locklear (VCU) also went deep twice in a 2-for-4, four RBI night. Those two are now tied with Wareham’s Owen Diodati for the league lead in home runs with four.

Garret Guillemette (USC) entered the night 1-for-13 on the season, then smacked two home runs as part of a 3-for-4 performance.

Though he hit only one bomb, Peyton Chatagnier (Ole Miss) had the biggest one, a grand slam that really broke things open in the fifth inning.

Rhylan Thomas (USC) had two hits and is leading the league with a .400 batting average.

The offense made a winner out of Hayden Thomas (Texas A&M Corpus Christ), who allowed two runs in five innings.

Zach Neto (Campbell) and Colin Davis (Wofford) each hit three-run homers for Brewster, but it obviously wasn’t enough.

Orleans is now 5-4-1, while Brewster drops to 4-4-2.

Bourne 6, Falmouth 3

The Bourne Braves are *still* undefeated, now 8-0-2 after a win over Falmouth. The Braves took a 4-0 lead in the early innings and stayed in front throughout. Dalton Rushing (Louisville) hit his second home run and his Cardinal teammate Christian Knapczyk (Louisville) had three hits. Four other Braves had two hits each. On the mount, Hunter Omlid (Central Arizona) and Michael Sansone (Fairfield) each allowed one earned run in four-inning stints. Eric Adler (Wake Forest) worked a scoreless ninth for his third save. Anthony Hall (Oregon) homered for Falmouth, which fell to 4-4-2.

Wareham 4, Hyannis 0

The Gatemen logged their first shutout of the season in a 4-0 win over Hyannis. The Harbor Hawks totaled only two hits against five Wareham pitchers. Erubiel Candelario (Marist) started and went three innings. Alexander Pham (San Francisco) struck out four of the 10 batters he faced and was credited with the win. Spencer Miles (Missouri) fanned five in two innings. The Wareham offense was led by Justin Williams (Penn State), who hit his third home run of the summer. Wareham is 4-4-2 and Hyannis is 2-8.

Chatham 4, Y-D 1

The Anglers snapped a two-game skid with a win over East leading Y-D. Each team scored a run in the second inning and the game remained tied until Chatham’s three-run sixth inning. A two-run homer by Logan Britt (Texas A&M), his first of the summer, broke the deadlock. An RBI fielder’s choice by Dominic Tamez (Alabama) scored the other run of the inning. Chatham’s earlier run came courtesy of a Lyle Miller-Green (Chipola) home run. Chatham’s favorite pitching tag team was back together for the third time. Daniel Federman (Miami) allowed one run in three innings, before Garrett Crowley (Fordham) and Victor Mederos (Miami) didn’t give up a hit in three innings each. The Anglers are 4-5-2 and Y-D is 4-3-4.

Harwich 10, Cotuit 3

Technical difficulties on the boxscore from this one so a little light on the details, but Harwich pulled away for a win over Cotuit. Tatem Levins (Pittsburgh) hit a three-run home run and added one extra RBI to lead the Mariner attack.  Pres Cavenaugh (UNC Greensboro) drove in three runs. The Mariners are 4-5-1, while Cotuit goes to 5-7.

WHAT TO WATCH

Orleans and Chatham begin their annual holiday home-and-home Saturday at Veterans Field.

Daily Fog: Between the Raindrops

Even the weather is cooperating with the Bourne Braves.

The Braves hosted Brewster on Thursday in the league’s only game of the night. After rain delayed the first pitch, the teams had a window for getting some innings in. Bourne took advantage, winning 3-1 as the game was called after seven innings due to another round of rain.

The Braves are now 7-0-2, still unbeaten as we approach the two-week mark of the regular season.

They scored first after the rain delay on Thursday, getting a run in the bottom of the first on a Cayden Wallace (Alabama) RBI single. Brewster tied the game in the second inning, but Wallace struck again in the fifth inning. He smacked a two-run homer, his second of the season, to put the Braves ahead.

Two Bourne pitchers held Brewster to just the one run on three hits. Andrew Taylor (Central Michigan) struck out three and allowed the run in three innings. Austin Parsley (UNC Greensboro) was great out of the bullpen, striking out five and allowing two hits in four scoreless innings.

WHAT TO WATCH

Weather permitting, back to a full slate on Friday. Bourne has a six-point lead on second place Falmouth in the West Division. The Commodores will be next in line to try to beat the Braves when they host a 6 p.m. game.

Daily Fog: Running Wild

Colin Davis (Wofford) is still running wild, and his Brewster club is making a run up the East Division standings at the same time.

Davis stole his ninth and 10th bases of the summer on Wednesday night as the Whitecaps blew past Chatham 9-1. The two teams had entered the night in a tie for second place. Brewster is now all alone in that spot with a 4-2-2 record. Chatham dropped to 3-5-2.

Davis has played in all eight of Brewster’s games and has stolen at least one base in all but two of them. He’s on pace to steal 50 bases. You would expect that pace to slow at some point, but if he were to keep it up, 50 would be a new Cape League record. Even 30 or 40 would be a huge number, particularly in light of recent league history. As stolen base totals have dropped at the Major League level, it’s been the same story on the Cape. A few times in recent seasons, the league leader hasn’t cracked 20.

Davis is getting plenty of chances, too. He went 2-for-3 in Wednesday’s game and drew two walks. He’s hitting .370 with a .486 on-base percentage.

Brewster gave him some company on the bases in the winning effort over Chatham. Jake Thompson (Oklahoma State) had three hits, Cooper Weiss (Coastal Carolina) hit his second home run of the summer and Zach Neto (Campbell) had two hits and also stole a base.

Teddy McGraw (Wake Forest) allowed one run in five innings for the win.

Hyannis 5, Falmouth 2

Mired in a 1-7 start, Hyannis broke out with four runs in the top of the first inning and made the lead stand up in a victory over Falmouth. Marcos Pujols Martinez (Dayton) had the big blow in the fast start with a two-run single. Mitchell Hartigan (Florida Atlantic) drove in a run with a single and Dominic Johnson (Oklahoma State) had an RBI triple. Caden Rose (Alabama) added an RBI in the fourth inning, part of a 2-for-4 day. Staked to the lead, Hunter Dula (Wingate) struck out six and allowed just one run in four innings. Five pitchers tossed one inning each out of the Hyannis bullpen, the last four delivering scoreless and hitless outings. Mark Adamiak (Arkansas) was credited with the win. Daniel Lloyd (South Carolina) struck out the side in the ninth for the save.

Orleans 12, Cotuit 4

Firebird standouts Jace Jung and Jordan Sprinkle are off to Team USA for a few weeks, but their teammates did plenty of damage in their absence Wednesday night, smacking 13 hits in a blowout of Cotuit. Tyler Locklear (VCU) and Chase DeLauter (James Madison) each hit their second home runs of the summer. Jared McKenzie (Baylor) went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Peyton Chatagnier (Ole Miss) scored three runs out of the leadoff spot. Marquis Grissom Jr. (Georgia Tech), son of the former MLB all-star, allowed one run in three innings in his first start. For Cotuit, Luke Gold (Boston College) picked up his league-leading 13th RBI.

Y-D 3, Wareham 3

The Red Sox scored a run in the eighth to force another tie, their fourth of the season in 10 games. Tanner Smith (Oregon) evened the score with a sacrifice fly. Christian Culpepper (California Baptist) pitched a scoreless ninth for Y-D to keep it tied and Jonathan Brand (Miami Ohio) did the same for Wareham in the bottom half. Justin Williams (Penn State) hit two home runs for Wareham, while Owen Diodati (Alabama) took over the league lead with his fourth homer of the summer.

Bourne 1, Harwich 1

Two hours of weather delays and great pitching from Harwich still couldn’t get the best of Bourne. Out of the delay, Colton Bender (Rutgers) hit a game-tying home run in the seventh inning and neither team scored again as the Braves remained undefeated with their second straight tie. Harwich had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Carter Putz (Notre Dame). Cayden Wallace (Arkansas) threw out a runner at the plate on the same play to keep it a one-run game. Then came lightning and rain. When the game resumed, Bender was the first batter up and cranked the homer to tie it. Bourne is now 6-0-2 while Harwich is 3-5-1.

WHAT TO WATCH

Just one game on the schedule Thursday as Brewster visits Bourne. Andrew Taylor (Central Michigan) starts for the Braves after striking out eight in four scoreless innings in his first start.

Daily Fog: Left side, strong side

Brooks Lee (Cal Poly) and Peyton Graham (Oklahoma) are forming a dynamic left side of the infield for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Both are hitting almost .400 and they homered on Tuesday as the Red Sox beat Harwich 6-4.

Lee has been pegged as a top prospect for the draft class of 2022 from the moment he told MLB teams he wouldn’t sign if picked out of high school in 2020 because he wanted to play for his father, the head coach at Cal Poly. The shortstop has been as good as advertised this summer. The home run on Tuesday – a three-run shot in the first inning – was his third of the season, which is tied for the league lead. He finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and is now hitting .389.

Graham doesn’t have quite the same history but his is also a name to watch for 2022. He hit 11 home runs for Oklahoma in the spring. So far on the Cape, Graham has been great while playing at third base alongside Lee. He has logged a hit in all but one of his nine games. Tuesday was his best, as Graham went 4-for-5 with his second home run of the season.

Lee and Graham weren’t alone in big games Tuesday, as the Red Sox tallied 15 hits. Nathan Baez (Arizona State) went 4-for-5. Chase Luttrell (Long Beach State) and Wyatt Hoffman (Pacific) had two hits each.

On the mound, Nick Dombkowski (Hartford) allowed two runs in five innings for the win.

Y-D is now 4-2-3 and leads the East Division.

Cotuit 8, Hyannis 1

Hyannis won the first game in its rivalry matchup with Cotuit, but the Kettleers have taken two in a row on back-to-back days, with a total of 21 runs in the victories. Luke Gold (Boston College) went 2-for-4 with four RBI and is now the league leader in RBI with 12. Eric Brown (Coastal Carolina) added two hits, while the Cal-Berkely duo of Dylan Beavers and Nathan Martorella each drove in one run. Jake Brooks (UCLA) pitched 5.2 scoreless innings for the win. He has yet to allow a run in 11 innings of work this summer. Shawn Rapp (North Carolina) struck out six in 3.1 innings. Cotuit is 4-4 while Hyannis dropped to 1-7.

Wareham 10, Orleans 4

The Gatemen put up six runs in the third inning and rode a dominant relief effort to a win over Orleans. A two-run single by Jim Jarvis (Alabama) was the big blow in the third inning burst. Later, Angelo DiSpigna (Mercer) homered. Owen Diodati (Alabama) drove in two runs. The Wareham bullpen didn’t need any extra support. Three pitchers combined to allow just one hit over six innings of work. Ian Villers (California) struck out five in four scoreless innings for the win. For Orleans, Jace Jung (Texas Tech) hit a grand slam.

Falmouth 8, Chatham 1

Falmouth pulled away late and its pitchers didn’t allow an earned run in an 8-1 victory over Chatham. Brayden Taylor (TCU) led an 11-hit attack with his fourth multi-hit game of the summer. He went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Jonathan French (Clemson) added two hits and two RBI. Michael Curriale (UCLA) also stayed hot, going 2-for-5 with an RBI. Trey McLoughlin (Fairfield) struck out four over five scoreless innings in his first start of the summer. Anthony DeFabbia (Stetson) and Wesley Sweatt (South Carolina) finished off the win.

WHAT TO WATCH

Brewster and Chatham are tied for second place in the East. They won’t be tied for long, with the Anglers visiting the Whitecaps on Wednesday.

Daily Fog: Starter Kit

Harwich got another great start from Evan Shawver on Monday

Monday was a great night for starting pitching in the Cape Cod Baseball League, even if it didn’t automatically equal team success.

Evan Shawver (Cincinnati) was dominant for the second time in as many outings, striking out 12 in six innings for Harwich a week after fanning 10 in six scoreless frames. He has the early league lead in strikeouts.

In a landscape that often favors short stints for pitchers, Shawver finally had some company Monday. Bryce Hubbart, a highly touted young pitcher from Florida State, struck out nine in five innings for Brewster. He now ranks second in the league in Ks. In Cotuit, Jake Smith (Miami) surrendered two hits in five innings and struck out 10.

As for their teams, Shawver was touched up for a pair of runs as Orleans won 2-1. Hubbart and the Whitecaps played to a 1-1 tie against Y-D. Cotuit made a winner out of Smith thanks to an offensive explosion and a bullpen that gave up some late runs but ultimately closed the door.

Orleans 2, Harwich 1

Shawver struck out the side around two hits in the first inning. He took a shutout into the fifth when Orleans broke through for the only runs it would need. The first scored on an error and the second came in on an RBI fielder’s choice by Connor Kokx (Long Beach State). Harwich got an RBI from Zack Prajzner (Notre Dame) but not much else. Orleans starter Max Rajcic (UCLA) tossed three scoreless frames. Jack Filby (UCLA) and Nick Hull (Grand Canyon) also delivered scoreless outings.

Brewster 1, Y-D 1

Hubbart went from solid in his first start to spectacular in his second. After allowing three runs  and striking out seven on June 21, the Seminole lefty struck out nine and allowed just one hit. Y-D starter Drew Thorpe (Cal Poly) struck out five and allowed one run in five strong innings. Hubbart’s FSU teammate Ross Dunn helped close the door for Y-D, striking out five in 2.2 perfect innings. Andrew Marrero (UConn) struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings. Each team got its lone bit of offense on solo home runs. Gavin Cross (Virginia Tech) did the honors for Brewster with his second of the season. Brooks Lee (Cal Poly) hit his second for Y-D and is now batting .387.

Cotuit 13, Hyannis 5

Smith was terrific for Cotuit, giving up two hits and striking out 10 against just one walk in five innings of work. The bullpen encountered a little bit of trouble, but the Kettleers had already provided plenty of run support. RJ Schreck (Duke) homered and drove in two. Brett Roberts (Florida State) added three hits and two RBI. Ben Rice (Dartmouth) and Brooks Baldwin (UNC Wilmington) also drove in two runs each. Cole Cummings (UC Santa Barbara) went 2-for-5. He has at least one hit in each of the six games he’s played.

Bourne 3, Chatham 3

Bourne’s six-game win streak to start the season is over, but the Braves are still unbeaten after a tie with Chatham. The Anglers were in position to send Bourne to its first loss, but a ninth-inning rally by the Braves forced the tie. It was a 3-2 Chatham lead with two outs in the ninth when Braylen Wimmer (South Carolina) knocked an RBI single to score Jake Agnos (East Carolina) with the tying run. The winning run was stranded on second as Chatham salvaged the tie. Agnos and Kyler Fedko (UConn) led the Bourne offense with two hits each. Jordan Patty (Central Michigan) struck out six in four strong innings for the Braves. Seth Stephenson (Temple College) went 3-for-3 for Chatham. Adam Tulloch (West Virginia) struck out six in four innings and is up to seven innings without a run allowed.

Falmouth 3, Wareham 3

Another tie? Yep. These two were even throughout. Falmouth scored two runs in the top of the first and Wareham scored two in the bottom half. The Commodores added a run in the second. So did the Gatemen. From there, it was all zeroes. Kade Kern (Ohio State) provided the bulk of the offense for Wareham with his second home run of the season. Kodie Kolden (Washington State) — yes even the initials matched tonight – had an RBI for Falmouth, as did Jace Bohrofen (Oklahoma). Chase Jeter (Sacred Heart) was the pitching star for Falmouth with three scoreless innings. Samuel Natera (New Mexico State) struck out seven in four scoreless innings for Wareham.

WHAT TO WATCH

Two of the top arms on the New England college baseball season face off as Harwich visits Y-D. Cam Schlitter (Northeastern) gets the ball for Harwich. Nick Dombkowski (Hartford) is slated to go for the Red Sox.

Daily Fog: Six in a Row

One week into the season, the Bourne Braves still haven’t lost a game.

Sunday’s 9-2 win over Cotuit was the sixth in a row for Bourne. It’s the best start in the Cape League since Chatham also went 6-0 in 2013. Before that, it was the 2007 Y-D Red Sox who won six in a row out of the gates.

The latest victory was a pretty good representation of what has worked for the Braves, who rank first in the league in team batting average and first in team ERA. It was more of the same against the Kettleers, with the Bourne offense pounding out 12 hits and the pitching staff allowing just one earned run.

Four different Braves delivered two-hit games. Cayden Wallace (Arkansas) led the charge, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Joe Lampe (Arizona State) came through with his third two-hit game of the season, Christian Knapczyk (Louisville) had two hits and an RBI and Reggie Crawford (UConn) went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Crawford also finished out the game with a scoreless inning of relief. Before him, it was Nick Zwack (Xavier) going five strong innings for the win, striking out three and allowing just two hits. Benjamin Ethridge (Kennesaw State) shook off a tough first outing of the summer to allow one run in two innings. Xavier Lovett (Mississippi State) pitched a perfect eighth.

Bourne has outscored opponents 44-17 this season. Next up is a home game on Monday night against – coincidentally – the Chatham Anglers, whose 2013 start is the gold standard of the last decade. The Anglers lost their seventh game – also coincidentally, to Bourne. These Braves have a shot to surpass that start.

Brewster 3, Wareham 0

Brewster pitched a shutout for the second straight game. Dating back to a 3-2 win before the shutouts, the Whitecaps are working on a 23-inning scoreless streak. Harry Rutkowski (Rutgers) set the tone in this one, striking out nine and allowing just two hits over six innings. Griffin Green (Virginia Tech) kept it going with two scoreless frames. Hunter Patteson (Central Florida) struck out the side in the ninth for his second save. On the offensive side, Brewster got a home run from Gavin Cross (Virginia Tech), who had gone hitless in his first five games of the season before busting out with the long ball. Will Simpson (Washington) added an RBI, as did Colin Davis (Wofford). Davis also stole ANOTHER base, giving him eight in six games. Brewster is 3-2-1 and Wareham is 2-4.

Harwich 11, Chatham 6

Andrew Benefield (Dallas Baptist) hit a grand slam in a five-run first inning for Chatham, but it was Harwich who was grand from there. Brock Wilken (Wake Forest) hit a grand slam of his own for the Mariners, who regrouped from the tough first inning and pulled away for an 11-6 victory. Wilken finished with five RBI. Nick Lucky (Coastal Carolina) also homered and had two RBI. Ben Malgeri (Northeastern) went 2-for-5 for his second straight multi-hit game. Hal Hughes (Rice) also had two hits. Harwich starter Nick Sinacola (Maine) was charged with six runs due to the rough first inning but actually went five and allowed just one more, while striking out nine. Dalton Smith (Georgia Tech) was credited with the win thanks to three strong innings of relief. Harwich is 3-3 and Chatham dropped to 3-3-1.

Falmouth 8, Hyannis 5

Like Chatham, Falmouth powered its way to a five-run first inning, but this one held up. Jake Dukart (Oregon State) had a three-run double to lead the fast start and Jonathan French (Clemson) hit a two-run homer. Kodie Kolden (Washington State) and Walter Ahuna (Kansas) drove in one run each. Tyler Tuthill (Appalachian State) struck out four in two innings and got the win. Andrew Yancik (McKendree) earned the save. Falmouth improves to 3-2-1. The struggles continue for Hyannis, which dropped to 1-5.

Y-D 0, Orleans 0

The third tie of the season was the least eventful as Y-D and Orleans played to a scoreless draw. Luis Ramirez (Long Beach State) struck out seven and surrendered only two hits in five innings for Y-D. Reid McLaughlin (BYU) and Christian Culpepper (California Baptist) finished the job. On the other side, Jonathan Cannon (Georgia) delivered his second strong start for Orleans, going five scoreless with three strikeouts. He hasn’t allowed a run in nine innings this summer. Nick Wallerstedt (Arizona State) pitched two-thirds of an inning and Jakw Saum (UCLA) allowed just two hits in 3.1 innings. Scoring chances were limited. Jace Jung (Texas Tech) tripled to lead off the second for Orleans but was stranded at third. Brooks Lee (Cal Poly) stayed hot for Y-D with a 2-for-4 night. He has a hit in all but one game this summer and is batting .407.

WHAT TO WATCH

Week two gets started with a full slate of games. Harwich sends Evan Shawver (Cincinnati) to the hill against Orleans after his 10 K debut.

Daily Fog: Tag Team

The Chatham Anglers tweaked the tag team and had a much better night.

Daniel Federman, Garrett Crowley and Victor Mederos had some rough patches in the season opener, a 7-7 tie with Falmouth. Six days later, Mederos and Federman traded roles and, along with Crowley in the middle, the combined on a one-hit shutout as Chatham beats Hyannis 4-0.

Off a strong season at Miami, Federman had pitched the best among the three pitchers in the opener. On Saturday, he earned the start and struck out four in 3.2 scoreless innings. He allowed a first-inning double and nothing else. Federman has yet to allow an earned run this season.

Crowley was great in following Federman. The Fordham pitcher struck out six of the 12 batters he faced and didn’t allow a hit in three scoreless innings.

Mederos is a highly regarded prospect for Miami, but he struggled in his Cape debut. Back on the mound, he kept the shutout going for Federman and Crowley with two scoreless innings.

It was just the third shutout in the league so far.

Chatham’s offense provided support. Lyle Miller-Green (Oklahoma State) had a hit and two RBI and Kevin Parada had two hits. Jake Cunningham (Charlotte) had the only Hyannis hit.

Chatham is now 3-2-1, matching Y-D for the top mark in the East.

Brewster 2, Cotuit 0

It was also a shutout for Brewster, who handled Cotuit for a 2-0 win. Mason Barnett (Auburn) started the game and didn’t allow a hit in 2.2 innings. Connor Staine (Maryland) also stood out with three scoreless innings. Shawn Goosenberg (Northwestern) provided all the offense Brewster needed with a two-run home run. Colin Davis went 2-for-3 and continued to run wild on the bases, stealing his fourth and fifth bases already.

Bourne 6, Wareham 5

Bourne won again to remain undefeated at 5-0. The Braves did most of their scoring early for the latest victory, then held on in the late innings. Dalton Rushing (Louisville) stayed hot with two hits. Five different players had RBIs. Wareham made a comeback attempt, but Bourne held it off. Trystan Vrieling (Gonzaga) was credited with the win in relief. Wareham hit two home runs in the loss, one each for Kade Kern (Ohio State) and Nicholas Cimillo (Manhattan). Owen Diodati (Alabama) continued his torrid start with three hits.

Y-D 8, Orleans 7

The Red Sox scored two in the ninth for a comeback win over Orleans. It was an unusual game-winning rally, with Y-D doing it despite not getting a hit. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases. Chase Luttrell (Long Beach State) tie the game on a sacrifice fly. Peyton Graham (Oklahoma) scored the winning run when Orleans committed an error on a ball in play by Nathan Baez (Arizona State). Graham finished with three runs scored and a home run for the Red Sox, while Brooks Lee (Cal Poly) went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI. Jaret Godman (Oklahoma) set the stage for the rally with four scoreless innings of relief. For Orleans, Tyler Locklear (VCU) hit a grand slam. Rhylan Thomas (USC) delivered his third multi-hit game in a row.

Harwich 11, Falmouth 9

Harwich built a big early lead then stayed in front as the game turned into a slugfest in the late innings. Ben Malgeri (Northeastern) and Carter Putz (Notre Dame) had three hits each to lead the Mariner onslaught. Aaron McKeithan (UNC Charlotte) hit a home run and drove in two. Brock Wilken (Wake Forest) also went deep for the Mariners. Carson Seymour (Kansas State) got the win in relief. Aaron Holiday (Old Dominion) continued a dominant start with his third consecutive hitless and scoreless outing. He was credited with his second save after striking out the side in the ninth. Jace Bohrofen (Oklahoma) hit his second home run of the season for Falmouth.

WHAT TO WATCH

Nick Sinacola (Maine) ranked sixth in the nation in strikeouts in the spring. After fanning four in his Cape League debut, he gets the start for Harwich against Chatham.
