Double Dip

Wednesday was a long day for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks and the Wareham Gatemen.

One team surely didn’t mind.

Hyannis won the conclusion of a protested game with Wareham early in the afternoon, then beat Chatham 12-5 in the evening. Meanwhile, Wareham lost to Brewster to finish the day with two defeats. The whirlwind moved the Harbor Hawks into first place in the West, with a three-point lead over the Gatemen.

The protested game initially happened on July 8, when Hyannis won 9-5. The Gatemen protested due to a DH substitution ruling. DH Pavin Parks had come into pitch then departed the mound. When Wareham tried to reinsert him as the DH, umpires ruled he could not come back in. The Wareham website has a good summary of the situation.

Wareham won the protest and the game resumed in the top of the seventh inning, with Hyannis up 6-5. This time, the Harbor Hawks didn’t add any more offense, but they held off the Gatemen for the win. Dylan Thomas (Hawaii) pitched the entirety of the continuation, striking out six in 2.2 shutout innings.

In the second game of its quasi doubleheader, Hyannis rolled past Chatham, using an eight-run second inning to beat Chatham. Eric Rivera (Florida Atlantic) had an enormous night to lead the offense, going 5-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. He came into the game hitting .161 with no hits in his last seven games. He’s now hitting .230.

Tommy Jew (UC Santa Barbara) added two hits and two RBI. Five other players drove in one run each. Houston Roth (Ole Miss) struck out eight in 4.2 innings of work, while Adam Elliott (Louisville) earned the win in relief.

The Harbor Hawks have won four games in a row.

Brewster 5, Wareham 3

The aformentioned rough day for the Gatemen was sealed by Brewster, which won for the second straight time against Wareham. The Whitecaps trailed 3-0 but scored two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to take control. Conor Grammes (Xavier) and Hunter Bishop (Arizona State) each had two RBI, while Cameron Eden (California) had three hits and a run scored. Ben Dragani (Michigan) allowed just an unearned run in four innings of relief for the win, while Jacob Hennessy (Clemson) worked two scoreless frames for the save. The comeback spoiled a strong start by Wareham’s Ryan Garcia (UCLA), who struck out eight in five scoreless innings.

Falmouth 10, Orleans 3

Davis Sims (Murray State) hit two home runs to lead a 15-hit attack as Falmouth cruised past Orleans. Sims went 4-for-5 with the homers, five RBI and three runs scored. He’s now hitting .283 on the summer with five home runs. Matt Wallner (Southern Mississippi) also went deep. Maverick Handley (Stanford), Kyle Stowers (Stanford) and Edoaurd Julien (AUburn) tallied two hits each. Every player in the Falmouth lineup logged at least one hit. Spencer Strider (Clemson) earned the win, flashing swing-and-miss stuff out of the bullpen for the Commodores. While he walked five and allowed four hits, he also struck out nine in 3.2 innings. Orleans got a home run from Nick Osborne (Tennessee Tech), who moved into a tie for the league lead with seven.

Harwich 3, Cotuit 3

The Mariners and Kettleers played to a 12-inning draw at Whitehouse Field. Cotuit scored two runs in the third inning and one in the fourth. Harwich answered with three in the sixth and neither team touched the plate again. Michael Bienlien (NC State), George Kirby (Elon) and Andrew Misiaszek (Northeastern) handled the relief work for Harwich, with Misiaszek striking out six in three no-hit innings. Joseph Walsh (Boston College), Stephen Schoch (UMBC) and Garrett Gayle (Rice) matched them for Cotuit. Thomas Dillard (Ole Miss) led the Kettleer offense with two RBI. Andre Lipcius (Tennessee) had three hits to pace the Mariners.

Bourne 6, Y-D 3

A matchup with East-leading Y-D didn’t figure to the best chance for Bourne to stop a six-game losing streak, but that’s just what the Braves did. They jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, added to it and held off the Red Sox the rest of the way. Ashton Bardzell (Hartford) went 4-for-4 with an RBI, Anthony Prato (UConn) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Jared Triolo (Houston) had two RBI. Jared DiCesare (George Mason) allowed three runs in five innings and picked up the win. Three reliever combined for four shutout innings, with Jacob Wallace (UConn) closing it out for his fifth save.
