Out of the Fog

The fog that enveloped Veterans Field June 24, pictured, returned with Cotuit Monday night.

Cotuit and Chatham were apparently destined for a fog game. Back in June, the second game of a doubleheader at Veterans Field was postponed due to Chatham’s famous fog. Monday brought the rescheduled game — and more fog.

The Kettleers didn’t seem to mind.

Cotuit rallied from a five-run deficit with an insane 15 unanswered runs and won 15-5 in a game that was called in the sixth due to fog.

Chatham scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Cotuit answered with five in the top of the second and rolled on from there. Three runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth turned the game completely around.

Zachary Biermann (Coastal Carolina) and Michael Toglia (UCLA) both homered for the Kettleers. Biermann’s two-run blast highlighted the second-inning comeback. Toglia mashed a grand slam to cap the scoring in the fifth.

Jonathan Robertson (Creighton) added three hits and three RBI, while Peyton Burdick (Wright State) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Griffin McLarty (College of Charleston) came on to rescue the Kettleers in the top of the first inning and ended up staying on the mound for the rest of the game. He struck out four in 4.1 shutout innings.

The win was the second straight for the Kettleers, who improved to 16-16-3 and hold a four-point lead on Bourne for the final playoff spot in the West Division.

Falmouth 7, Hyannis 2

Falmouth posted its second consecutive win over Hyannis to move further into the top tier of the West Division. The Commodores now sit three points behind the first-place Harbor Hawks and two points back of second-place Wareham. Adam Laskey (Duke) delivered a solid start on the mound, allowing two runs in five innings for his fourth win. He now owns a 1.42 ERA. Three relievers kept Hyannis quiet in the late innings. A day after homering in the All-Star Game, Kyle Stowers (Stanford) homered again and scored three runs. Hayden Cantrelle (Louisiana-Lafayette) had three RBI, while Logan Davidson (Clemson) and Cameron Cannon (Arizona) each had two hits and one RBI.

Y-D 8, Bourne 3

Y-D rode 10 hits and a quality start from Tommy Henry (Michigan) to a win over Bourne. Zach Ashford (Fresno State) led the offense with three hits and three runs scored. Bradlee Beesley (Cal Poly) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Zach Zubia (Texas) drove in two runs. Henry allowed two runs on four hits in six innings for his best start of the summer.

What to Watch

Falmouth can make up even more ground as it takes on Hyannis for the third consecutive game. T.J. Sikkema (Missouri) and his 1.45 ERA will get the ball for the Commodores. Houston Roth (Ole Miss), who has a 4.32 ERA, is set to start for Hyannis.
